Identity

A take on the abstract concept of identity. This sculpture began as a painting with earthy colors and cut up pieces of certificates, travel documents, and letters featuring my prior last name. Confined by the space in between panels of wood, I ripped it off the canvas and began to form a heart like shape out of chicken wire, ever flowing and moving- as identity is. It is filled with hundreds of cotton balls describing my internal sense of identity with obscured words like “thoughtful” and “student.” I then cut shapes out of the canvas to cover the structure and used resin and fiberglass to create windows into the depths of the structure. There is a single twill string running throughout the sculpture to signify the various pieces of internal and external identity brought by others and our own self awareness tied together and wrapped up into one sense of identity.
